Title: Flavonoids’ Increasing Use in the Treatment of Depression
Abstract: One of the most prevalent psychological disorders, depression affects a person’s thoughts, feelings, behavior, and sense of wellbeing. By 2030, it is anticipated by the WHO to be the primary cause of numerous other diseases. Clinically, depression is treated with a variety of synthetic drugs, but these drugs have a number of drawbacks due to the complex pathophysiology of depression, including side effects, slow-onset action, poor remission, and response rates. Clinically speaking, patients cannot receive the treatment unless it has a negative impact on their job or family. Additionally, synthetic drugs typically have a single target. Contrary to synthetic medications, many plants contain flavonoids that act on a variety of molecular targets and have antidepressant effects by influencing a number of neuronal transmissions or pathways, including noradrenergic, serotonergic, GABAnergic, and dopaminergic; inhibiting monoamine oxidase and tropomyosin receptor kinase B; and simultaneously increasing nerve growth and brain-derived neurotrophic factors. Patients with sub-clinical depression are likely to benefit from such herbal medications with flavonoids. This review aims to analyze pre-clinical research, the relationship between structural activity and characteristics of isolated flavonoids that have been reported and could be used in clinical trials to create an effective antidepressant.
