Title: An Integrated View of a Multifaceted Therapeutic Enzyme, Serratiopeptidase
Abstract: Since ancient times, microbial products have been used to treat a variety of illnesses. The serratiopeptidase enzyme offers patients with COVID-19 infection new hope. Anti-inflammatory medications can now be easily and affordably obtained from microbial sources. Serratia genus is one of the bacteria that uses serratiopeptidase most effectively. Recently, there has been interest in searching through various sources for new and effective bacterial strains. The most popular anti-inflammatory drug is still serratiopeptidase. A less expensive and more efficient safer alternative to NSAIDs for anti-inflammatory medication. Serratiopeptidase has a variety of properties that could be used to treat diseases like diabetes, cancer, and thrombosis. Antibiotics and existing serratiopeptidase therapies are frequently used to treat postoperative swelling. There is a need for new recombinant strains to boost the production of serratiopeptidase despite the fact that only a small number of serratiopeptidase-producing strains have been developed. The characteristics of serratiopeptidase, various therapeutic applications, commercial production, and various analytical methods for enzyme recovery are all covered in this review. The review also emphasizes the serratiopeptidase enzyme’s therapeutic and clinical uses in treating COVID-19-induced respiratory syndrome.
