Title: Platforms for the fabrication of polysaccharides and evaluation of their biocompatibility as potential materials for wound dressing
Abstract: In order to prevent further harm or infection, wound dressings act as a physical barrier between the injury site and the outside environment. This makes them essential for wound care. For a complete recovery, wound dressings also control and even promote the wound healing process. Due to their natural origins, high abundance, low cost, absorbency, non-toxicity, and lack of immunogenicity, polysaccharide biopolymers are slowly gaining popularity as materials for modern wound dressings. Additionally, polysaccharide biopolymers have been transformed into biomimetic platforms that provide a bioactive component in wound dressings that promote healing. The fabrication of polysaccharide materials and their biocompatibility evaluation are the main topics of this review. Speaking specifically, popular polysaccharides like chitosan, alginate, and hyaluronic acid as well as emerging options like arabinoxylan are discussed. Other fabrication platforms like electrospun fibers and hydrogels are also covered, along with fabrication considerations for each. The text highlights studies on biocompatibility and bioactive molecule release that take advantage of the naturally occurring properties of polysaccharides, and the conclusion discusses challenges and potential future directions for the development of wound dressings using cutting-edge fabrication methods like 3D bioprinting. This paper aims to stimulate further research and open up novel, disruptive approaches for polysaccharides in the development of wound dressing materials.
