Title: Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Advances in Radiation Therapy
Abstract: An essential part of treating many pediatric brain tumors is radiation therapy (RT). Pediatric radiation oncology has seen a number of developments that aim to maximize the therapeutic ratio—improving disease control while reducing RT-related toxicity. These include advancements in radiation delivery techniques and innovations in treatment planning using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) simulation. Advanced RT methods, such as photon-based RT methods like intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), particle beam therapy, and stereotactic RT, have made it possible to treat target volumes while drastically reducing the radiation exposure to healthy tissues that are not involved. In current and upcoming prospective clinical trials, novel RT approaches are being used in conjunction with advancements in image guidance of radiation therapy. Personalization of radiation dose, target, and technique has the potential to significantly improve outcomes for pediatric neuro-oncology patients as the era of molecular risk stratification develops.
