Title: Early Concepts, Current Technologies, and Future Innovations in Cardiac Assist Devices
Abstract: Tens of millions of people suffer from congestive heart failure (CHF), a crippling condition that kills more people each year than all cancers put together. Given the lack of available donor hearts for transplantation, a reliable method of mechanical circulatory support could lengthen lives and ease suffering for millions of people. But despite the abundance of blood pumps available to clinicians in 2019, all long-term cardiac assist devices on the market today are constrained by the same two issues: infections brought on by percutaneous drivelines and thrombotic events brought on by the use of blood-contacting surfaces. To solve both of these issues and ultimately create a device that can support the heart indefinitely, a fundamental redesign of the device’s design is required. With the aim of providing a secure, tether-free method to support the failing heart for prolonged periods of time, several groups are currently working on developing devices without blood-contacting surfaces and/or extracorporeal power sources.
