Title: Mimicking Collagen Peptides
Abstract: Collagen mimetic peptides (CMPs) have been used as a molecular tool to study collagen and as a strategy to develop new collagen mimetic biomaterials since their initial synthesis in the late 1960s. Collagen, a significant extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, is essential for many physiological processes. both logical and harmful processes. Our knowledge of the structure and molecular characteristics of a collagen triple helix—the protein’s structural constituent—as well as the interactions between collagen and significant molecular ligands has improved as a result of applications of CMPs. The growing body of knowledge is also enabling the creation of fresh CMPs for biomedical uses. CMP research has been a rapidly expanding, interdisciplinary field for the past 50 years. A few thorough reviews published around 2010 provided documentation of the CMPs’ significant advancement and accomplishment. Here, we gave a succinct summary of our knowledge of CMPs, including both their strengths and weaknesses. We concentrated on more recent advances in the production of heterotrimeric CMPs and CMPs that can assemble into higher order molecular assemblies that resemble collagen. We further expanded the conventional view of CMPs to incorporate more substantial designed peptides made via recombinant techniques. Recombinant peptide studies have advanced the creation of collagen-mimetic fibrillar self-assemblies and revealed new information about collagens.
