Title: Collagen’s Function in Airway Mechanics
Abstract: The main determinant of mechanical airway properties is collagen, which is the most prevalent extracellular matrix component in the airways. The pathogenesis and development of airway disease are linked to abnormal collagen deposition in the airways. Consequently, comprehending how collagen impacts It’s crucial to have sound airway tissue mechanics. In pulmonary illnesses like cystic fibrosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the effects of abnormal collagen deposition and tissue stiffness have attracted attention. In this review, we cover three topics: (1) the function of collagen in airway mechanics; (2) macro- and micro-scale methods for measuring airway mechanics; and (3) pathological alterations brought on by collagen deposition in conditions affecting the airways. The significance of collagen in airway mechanics is clarified by these studies. We review their accomplishments and aim to offer biomechanical hints for regenerative medicine and targeted therapies to treat airway pathology and address airway defects.
