Title: Microstructure and Mechanics of the Atrioventricular Review of the Heart Valve Chordae Tendineae
Abstract: The chordae tendineae and the papillary muscles support the function of the atrioventricular heart valves (AHVs), which are in charge of controlling unidirectional blood flow through the heart by properly opening and closing the valve leaflets. In particular, the chordae tendineae play a crucial role in transferring forces from the leaflets to the papillary muscles during systolic closure, preventing leaflet prolapse and subsequent regurgitation. The recurrence of the disease or less than ideal treatment results are problems with current therapies for chordae failure. Researchers have worked to comprehend the microstructure and mechanics of the chordae tendineae of the AHVs in order to enhance those therapies. Recent literature has shown an increasing interest in the complex structures of chordae tendineae, and several important findings have not yet been fully enumerated in one review. In order to better understand the tissue mechanics-microstructure linking of the chordae tendineae of AHVs and to improve therapeutics for heart valve diseases brought on by chordae failures, we will summarize the current state of biomechanical and microstructural characterizations of the chordae tendineae in this review paper. We will also discuss perspectives for future studies.
