Title: Arsenic-Induced Neurotoxicity: Molecular Mechanism, Including Neuronal Dysfunctions
Abstract: A significant environmental toxin with negative effects on human health is arsenic. Arsenic contamination of groundwater affects millions of people in developing nations such as Bangladesh, Mexico, Taiwan, and India. Humans who are exposed to arsenic in the environment are more likely to develop different cancers, heart conditions, and neurological disorders. Drinking water is the most researched method of exposure to arsenic, but other sources include diet, wood preservatives, smoking, air pollution, and cosmetics. In comparison to its organic forms, inorganic arsenic is more toxic. Major neurological effects from inorganic arsenic exposure include cytotoxicity, chromosomal aberration, damage to cellular DNA, and genotoxicity. On the other hand, prolonged exposure to arsenic may have negative neurobehavioral effects in young children that may persist into adulthood. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend arsenic’s toxicology and underlying molecular mechanism in order to lessen its harmful effects. The focus of the current review is on the toxic mechanisms and epidemiology of arsenic-induced neurobehavioral diseases, as well as management tactics for removing it from water and other public and private spaces. The review also offers a critical evaluation of mitochondrial oxidative stress, neuronal dysfunction, arsenic-induced oxidative stress, epigenetic and transgenerational modifications, and mitochondrial oxidative stress.
