Title: Review of Current Biocontrol Agent Perspectives for the Control of Fusarium Verticillioides and Its Fumonisin in Cereals
Abstract: The most common fungal phytopathogen of cereals, Fusarium verticillioides, is causing serious concern on a global scale. The fungus causes cob, stalk, ear, root, crown, top, and foot rot and is primarily linked to maize, rice, sorghum, wheat, sugarcane, bananas, and asparagus. Fumonisins are the primary secondary metabolite produced by F. verticillioides, along with minor amounts of beauvericin, fusaric acid, fusarin C, gibberiliformin, and moniliformin. Fumonisins, a frequent contaminant in cereals and its processed food products, continue to draw a lot of attention because they are potentially cancer-causing agents. Given the significant health risks connected to its consumption, it is crucial to remove F. verticillioides growth and the fumonisin that it produces from cereals. It has been demonstrated that physical and chemical methods can lower fumonisin B1 concentrations in feed and food products, but they are ineffective during production. In order to manage F. verticillioides and its toxin, biological control methods have emerged that make use of microorganisms, plant extracts, antioxidants, essential oils, phenolic compounds, and other cutting-edge technologies like growing disease-resistant crops using genetic engineering. The present review has discussed the various approaches, difficulties, and issues related to the biocontrol of F. verticillioides and the production of fumonisin B1.
