Title: Silicon’s Effect on Biocontrol Techniques for Biotic Stress Management for Crop Protection, Performance, and Improvement
Abstract: Even though silicon (Si) plays a crucial role in a variety of plants, it has never been recognized as a necessary nutrient. Si-accumulating plants exposed to biotic stress may typically express Si more clearly. It prevents disease in several plant species. With the majority of minerals and rocks containing silicon, it is regarded as a common element in the lithosphere of up to 30% of soils and is categorized as a “significant non-essential” element for plants. Si is absorbed by plant roots and then transported to the aboveground parts via transpiration stream. In order to strengthen plants’ resistance to biotic stressors, the soluble Si in the cytosol activates metabolic processes that result in the production of jasmonic acid and herbivore-induced organic compounds. In addition to acting as a natural insect repellent, the soluble Si in plant tissues attracts natural parasitoids and predators during pest infestations to strengthen biological control. However, its use as a pesticide has received little attention to date from scientists, decision-makers, and farmers. Recent advances in the fields of genomics and metabolomics have created a new window of knowledge for the development of molecular strategies that incorporate Si’s function in plant stress reduction. The current status of Si-mediated plant defense against insect, fungal, and bacterial attacks is therefore summarized in the present review. It was noted that the Si-application reduces biotic stress over time, which may be advantageous for an ecologically integrated strategy in the near future instead of using pesticides to improve crops and increase productivity.
