Description
Title: Phylogenetically and morphologically different from Araceae are Lemnaceae and Orontiaceae.
Abstract: The family Lemnaceae, traditionally referred to as the clade of pleustophytic monocots that includes duckweeds, is distinguished by its distinctive morphology. However, molecular evidence has questioned their phylogenetic independence, leading some authors to argue that duckweeds should be reclassified as a member of the expanded family Araceae’s subfamily Lemnoideae. Multiple studies have shown that duckweeds and traditional Araceae share a close phylogenetic relationship; however, in order to support nomenclatural stability and utility, a more critical assessment of duckweeds’ taxonomic disposition is required. The long-used family category of Lemnaceae is effectively eliminated by including duckweeds as a morphologically discordant lineage of the Araceae. To recognize three morphologically and phylogenetically distinct lineages—Araceae, Lemnaceae, and Orontiaceae—instead, we propose that Orontioideae, a subfamily of the Araceae, be restored to family status as Orontiaceae.
