Description

Title: A New Long Non-Coding RNA (lncRNA) with Clinical Relevance in Human Malignancies is ABHD11-AS1.

Abstract: The emergence and spread of various cancers have been associated with the aberrant expression of lncRNAs. One such lncRNA is the antisense RNA 1 (ABHD11-AS1) of the gene ABHD11, which has recently received attention for its significant contribution to human malignancies. In gastric, lung, breast, colorectal, thyroid, pancreatic, ovarian, endometrial, cervix, and bladder cancers, ABHD11-AS1 is highly expressed. Numerous studies have emphasized the clinical importance of ABHD11-AS1 in terms of diagnosis, prognosis, cancer stage prediction, and treatment response. Intriguingly, serum levels of ABHD11-AS1 have prognostic potential in thyroid cancers while their levels in gastric juice have been demonstrated as a clinical biomarker for the assessment of gastric cancer. According to reports, the ABHD11-AS1 affects signaling pathways like PI3K/Akt, epigenetic mechanisms, and N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification in addition to sponging various microRNAs (miRNAs). On the other hand, overexpression of the mouse AHD11-AS1 homolog (Abhd11os) had demonstrated neuroprotective effects against mutant huntingtin-induced toxicity. In this first review on ABHD11-AS1, the authors made an effort to summarize and highlight its oncogenic potential and clinical significance in various human cancers in light of the emerging research reports. Last but not least, we emphasized the need for further mechanistic research to clarify how ABHD11-AS1 contributes to tumor growth, progression, and targeted treatment options.
