Description

Title: Biology, significance, and biotechnological interventions in the genus Decalepis

Abstract: Due to destructive wild harvesting, the steno-endemic species of Decalepis are under serious threat. Due to its distinctive tuberous root characteristics and wide range of biological and medicinal properties, the genus asserted its paramount importance to humanity and is used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Species from the genus Decalepis are classified as critically endangered globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These plants are endemic to a small portion of peninsular India, particularly the Eastern and Western Ghats. The genus Decalepis consists of five species: D. khasiana (Kurz) Ionta ex Kambale, D. hamiltonii Wight & Arn., D. arayalpathra (J. Joseph & V. Chandras.) Venter, D. salicifolia (Bedd. ex Hook. f.) Venter, and D. nervosa (Wight & Arn.) The tribespeople use every species of Decalepis, and they also use them in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine. Overharvesting is a result of increased international trade for this plant. Plant tissue culture offers the chance for extensive in vitro production of the plant without sacrificing their natural habitats, in contrast to the traditional methods of propagation, such as seed germination and vegetative, which are constrained and endanger the species population. With an examination of their geographic distribution, chemical profile, pharmacology, biological activities, micropropagation, somatic embryogenesis, synthetic seed, and genetic transformation, this review aims to systematize the most recent information about the Genus Decalepis.
