Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has obscured a number of socioeconomic issues. The agricultural and food industries have been particularly hard hit by this terrible illness. Additionally, with the world population growing and agricultural production technologies becoming less effective or obsolete, there is a critical need to develop novel, effective approaches to meet the rising food demand. Agri-food 4.0, which enables the subsequent level of agri-food production and trade, is a revolutionary set of concepts, procedures, and technologies that herald a new era in agriculture and the food industry. The origin, traceability, healthfulness, and high quality of agri-food products are also topics of increasing consumer awareness. To satisfy consumer and market demands, the integration of new production and data management processes is a requirement. In particular for olive oil, DNA traceability may offer a powerful method to certify and authenticate healthy food products. This method uses distinctive nucleic acid sequences to verify the products’ provenance and authenticity. In this paper, a few tools, techniques, and technologies that are used in and help advance the agri-food industry are presented and discussed. In addition, this paper reports on the innovative use of DNA traceability to authenticate olive products as a promising application of smart agriculture.
