Title: Probiotics are developing as a potential treatment for acetaminophen-induced liver toxicity.
Abstract: The most widely prescribed drug in the world to treat pain and fever is acetaminophen (APAP), which is regarded as a safe medication when used as directed. However, APAP use on a regular basis or in excess can result in severe acute liver damage. Around the world, APAP hepatotoxicity is a common cause of acute liver disease, and the lack of effective treatment makes it a serious issue. The use of probiotics and postbiotics—products derived from probiotics—as health and disease negotiators has gained popularity recently. They can both be equally effective against APAP hepatotoxicity, according to mounting evidence. The pre-clinical efficacy of various probiotic bacteria against APAP hepatotoxicity was discovered. Various postbiotics have also produced promising results in APAP hepatotoxicity preclinical models. This review provided a critical analysis of the protective functions and mechanisms of the various probiotic bacteria and postbiotics against APAP hepatotoxicity. There was also a brief discussion of possible novel probiotics and postbiotics for oxidative liver injury. Probiotics and/or postbiotics were used as dietary supplements in the writing of this review in an effort to pique the interest of researchers in creating a secure therapeutic option against oxidative live damage.
