Title: Natural Marine Products for Clinical Use
Abstract: Among other natural products of plant, animal, and microbial origin, marine natural products are potent and promising sources of medications. There are currently 20 marine-derived medications in clinical use. The majority of approved marine compounds are anti-cancer, but some are also used as haptens and vaccine carriers, to treat heparin overdose, to treat chronic neuropathic pain, and to supplement the diet with omega-3 fatty acids. Diverse structural traits and mechanisms of action characterize marine drugs. In the last few decades, there has been a notable rise in the number of marine drugs that have been approved for clinical use, which may be related to the expansion of marine compound research in labs around the globe. In the current manuscript, we thoroughly examined all marine medications that have been successfully applied in clinical settings. As a large number of marine natural compounds are being examined in preclinical and clinical studies, researchers and clinicians are optimistic that many more drugs will be discovered in the future.
