Title: Phycoremediation of microalgae: A Peek into a Sustainable Environment
Abstract: Continuous exposure to heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) inhibits the growth and reproduction of microalgae due to the physiological and metabolic abnormalities that result, which lowers crop productivity. In order to survive in such a hostile environment without compromising their ability to grow, develop, reproduce, or survive, they must change the way they adapt. In order to produce altered but adapted biochemical and physiochemical parameters, the mode of adaptation involves a complex relationship of signaling cascades that control gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. It has been noted that exposure to a variety of HMMs changed the physicochemical and molecular perspectives of algae. As a result, we concentrated on how microalgae modify their physicochemical and molecular properties as a tolerance mechanism in response to stress caused by HMM in this review. Furthermore, extracellular absorption and cleanup can be improved using physiological and biotechnological techniques. The bio-accumulation and remediation abilities of microalgae can be enhanced by the genetic modification of genes and the introduction of foreign DNA into microalgae cells. Microalgae are a great model organism in this regard and might be used in the near future to remove HMM.
