Title: Molecular Crosstalk in Oral Cancer between Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and the Immunological Tumor Microenvironment
Abstract: Oral cancer is a serious non-communicable disease that affects both emerging economies and industrialized nations. The eight most common cancer types in the world are represented by squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, which accounts for more than 350,000 confirmed cases annually. One of the most difficult tumors to manage and treat is oral cancer. Due to local invasion and recurrent lymph node metastasis, oral cancer has a poor prognosis. A different population of cells, including cancer-associated fibroblasts, immune-infiltrating cells, and other extracellular matrix non-components, are present in the tumor microenvironment. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, a multifaceted progression that primarily causes metastatic spread from a primary site (EMT). During EMT, epithelial cells acquire the structural and functional traits of mesenchymal cells, which enhance cell migration and encourage the spread of tumor cells. The relationship between the tumor microenvironment and EMT’s impact on signaling events such as inflammation, receptor involvement, transcriptional factors, and microRNA is discussed in this review. As a result, it would be possible to comprehend the EMT and tumor microenvironment during oral cancer more fully.
