Abstract: Plants require micronutrients in order to grow. The availability of micronutrients has a direct impact on their development, productivity, and reproduction. Eight trace elements are currently thought to be necessary for higher plants: Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Ni, B, Mo, and Cl. Recent improvements in nutrient solution culture methods and the commercial availability of highly sensitive analytical instrumentation for elemental analysis may lead to the discovery of additional essential elements. The physiology of micronutrient absorption, translocation, and deposition in plants, as well as the roles they play in plant growth and development, are still poorly understood. Researchers have made an effort to investigate and respond to some of these questions using the most recent developments in proteomic and molecular biology tools. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of plant micronutrients as well as the proteomic and genomic methods used to investigate plant nutrient toxicity.
