Title: An Underutilized Fruit with High Nutraceutical Values: A Review of Aegle marmelos (L.)
Abstract: The Rutaceae family’s Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa (Bael) fruit is a widely cultivated fruit tree in Southeast Asian nations with tropical and subtropical climates. Due to its high nutritional value (carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins) and the presence of numerous phytochemicals, which contributed to its high medicinal value, bael fruit has become a hot topic for research in recent years. These phytochemicals are made up of a variety of substances, such as phenolic acids, alkaloids, and flavonoids (protocatechuic acid, gallic, and ellagic acid). The pharmacological activities of the bael fruit extract, such as its antidiarrheal, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, radioprotective, anticancer, and antiulcer properties, have also been a focus of research. The nutritional and pharmacological benefits of bael fruit were primarily highlighted in the current review. The review covered the fruit’s phytochemical and nutritional profiles as well as their distribution. Also covered in the article were the in vivo and in vitro tests done on bael fruit extracts to determine their pharmacological effects. The bael fruit has a high potential as a food and pharmaceutical product, according to recent literature based on its nutritional and pharmacological values. Despite the bael fruit’s high nutritional and pharmacological value, there is still little research on its molecular mechanisms, and clinical trials are required to guarantee its safety as a food and pharmaceutical industry product.
