Title: Bioplastic Production Through Revalorization of Microalgae Biomass for Synergistic Interaction
Abstract: Photosynthetic microorganisms’ renewable biomass sources that can be used to make bioplastics include microalgae and cyanobacteria. These microorganisms have rapid growth rates and don’t need arable land, in contrast to other feedstocks like land crops. Additionally, they don’t compete with food sources and can be used as a feedstock for the production of bioplastic (e.g., corn, wheat, and soy protein). In this study, we review the microalgal and cyanobacterial macromolecules, such as starch and glycogen, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), cellulose, polylactic acid (PLA), and triacylglycerols, that can be used to produce bioplastics (TAGs). We also concentrate on the cultivation of cyanobacteria and microalgae for wastewater treatment. Utilizing this strategy would enable nutrient supply reduction for biomass production while treating wastewater. Thus, the production of biomass that can be used as a feedstock for the production of bioplastics in conjunction with wastewater treatment is discussed. Interdisciplinary and translational research would be able to cover more ground thanks to the comprehensive information provided in this communication.
