Title: Tools for Understanding and Targeting Cancer Pathways: Long Non-Coding RNAs
Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a well-established regulatory role in numerous cellular processes of growth, development, and differentiation. Investigating their role in the emergence of cancer is crucial. Numerous lncRNAs have cellular levels that are strongly correlated with clinical outcomes. It is still unknown, though, whether these non-coding molecules can act as major accelerators or inhibitors of the development of cancer. The purpose of the current review is to discuss a few lncRNAs that have been well studied in the context of oncogenesis and extrapolate the magnitude of their significant impact on tumor growth. We wonder if these lncRNAs can independently cause neoplastic lesions or if their functional characteristics always depend on the modulation of well-studied oncogenes or tumour suppressors. Finally, we discuss the cutting-edge genetic techniques and suitable animal and humanized models that can greatly aid in the functional analysis of lncRNAs in the initiation and progression of cancer.
