Title: Ghana’s Sickle Cell Disease Burden: The Korle-Bu Story
Abstract: With over 200,000 new babies born each year, sickle cell disease (SCD) is a significant public health issue in Africa. Every year, about 15,000 (2%) newborns in Ghana are given the diagnosis of SCD. In order to document the phenotypes, demographics, attendance/clinic visits, pattern of attendance, and common complications experienced by all SCD patients aged 13 years and older who presented to the sickle cell clinic at Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics (GICG), Korle-Bu, from 1st January 2013 to 31st December 2014, a retrospective review of their medical records was conducted. 5,451 patients were seen at the GICG during the time period under review, totaling 20,788 clinic visits. The HbSS (55.7%) and HbSC (39.6%) phenotypes were present, along with other sickle cell phenotypes (4.7%). Outpatient visits made up 15,802 (76%) of the 20,788 clinic visits, while urgent care visits totaled 4,986 (24%) of the visits. Of these, 128 (2.6%) patients were admitted to the Teaching Hospital for additional treatment of their acute complications. Out of 5,451 patients, 904 patients were referred for specialty care, with ophthalmology (150 patients), orthopedics (168 patients), and obstetrics and gynecology (168 patients) receiving the most referrals (143 patients). 53 patients with avascular necrosis (AVN) and 61 patients with chronic leg ulcers were among the complications seen at KBTH in 2014. Many of the patients at our facility have sickle cell disease. According to our experience, identifying and referring sickle cell-related complications early can lower the morbidity and mortality linked to this condition. Therefore, it’s crucial to use a multidisciplinary approach when treating SCD patients.
