Title: Six-Year Post-Pilot Phase Experience in Burkina Faso on Traceability of Blood Transfusions and Reporting of Adverse Reactions in Developing Countries
Abstract: For hemovigilance and the safety of blood transfusions, traceability is a crucial tool. The implementation of hemovigilance was accomplished in Burkina Faso as part of a pilot project from 2005 to 2009. Our research aims to assess the 6-year postpilot phase reporting of adverse reactions and the traceability of blood transfusions. A cross-sectional study of all blood units ordered between 2010 and 2015 in both public and private healthcare facilities that receive blood supplies from the Bobo-Dioulasso transfusion center was carried out. For 83.5% of the delivered blood units, full traceability was possible. There were 107 cases of adverse reactions reported, or 2.1/1,000 blood units annually. In 13 cases, the wrong blood was transfused to the wrong patient. Our research demonstrates the need for improvements to Burkina Faso’s hemovigilance system. Healthcare professionals need to be made aware of how traceability and hemovigilance may affect the standard of care given to patients.
