Title: Factors Linked to Anemia Among HIV/AIDS Patients Taking ART in Ethiopia

Abstract: Background. Anemia among HIV/AIDS patients is a significant public health issue on a global scale. Numerous factors frequently affect anemia, and it has a significant impact on the development of HIV/AIDS into advanced stages. However, little is known about the causes of anemia in HIV/AIDS patients in developing nations like Ethiopia. Objective. This study looked into what factors affected anemia in HIV/AIDS patients receiving ART at Tikur  AnbessaSpecialized Hospital in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Methods. A cross-sectional study based in a hospital was used to evaluate the variables influencing anemia in HIV/AIDS patients. A structured checklist was used to collect data from the medical records of patients chosen at random. Using logistic regression models, we examined the data to determine the causes of anemia in HIV/AIDS patients. Results. 301 chosen charts in total were examined. The age at the median was 38 + 10.38. Most of the patients (62.5%) were taking ZDV-containing ART medication (ZDV/3TC/NVP). Approximately 5%, 15.6%, and 14% of the patients had severe, moderate, and mild anemia, respectively, while the overall anemia prevalence was 34.6%. These patients’ gender, occupation, platelet count, nutritional status, and WHO clinical stage of HIV/AIDS were found to be associated with anemia, respectively (OR= 2.26 [95%CI: 1.22, 4.16], 0.57 [95%CI: 0.35, 0.92], 2.30 [95%CI: 1.29, 4.09], 2.89 [95%CI: 0.99, 8.41], and 3.69 [95%CI: 1.86, 7.31]). Conclusions. Anemia was discovered in about one in three patients. Consideration should be given to an intervention aimed at identifying and treating anemia in HIV/AIDS patients.
