Title: Measuring the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of 350 Saudi Adults Regarding Sickle Cell Disease and Premarital Genetic Counseling
Abstract: In 351 Saudi adults, our study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) levels related to sickle cell disease (SCD) and premarital genetic counseling (PMGC). Age, gender, marital status, and educational level were the sociodemographic characteristics with which KAP levels were correlated. The study was carried out between February 21, 2017, and March 7, 2018, at King Khalid University Hospital. A self-administered questionnaire was given to a total of 351 Saudi participants who were enrolled in the primary care clinic and were chosen using convenience sampling. Overall, 41% of the 351 participants gave their attitude a “good” rating, followed by 28.8% for knowledge and 19.1% for practice. Age group was the sociodemographic characteristic with the highest statistical significance across all three categories (knowledge, attitude, and practice). In all three categories, the performance of the over 50 age group was the worst. Our study showed that there are still many gaps to be filled in terms of the knowledge, attitude, and practice associated with SCD and PMGC in Saudi Arabia despite the improvements in public healthcare measures.
