Description

Title: Study of Red Blood Cell Alloimmunization Frequency and Features in Thalassemic Patients: Multicenter Study from Palestine

Abstract: Earlier context. In Palestine, alassemia is a typical inherited hemolytic disorder. The main form of treatment is red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, but this can result in RBC alloimmunization. This study examined thalassemic patients in Palestine’s northern governorates to ascertain the prevalence and characteristics of RBC alloimmunization. Methods. In the thalassemia transfusion facilities in the northern Palestinian governorates, a prospective multicenter observational study was carried out. 215 thalassemia patients who frequently received blood transfusions were included in the study. Patients’ clinical and transfusion histories were reviewed. The microcolumn gel technique was used for antibody identification and screening. Results. In total, 218 patients were enrolled in the study. Males made up more than half (52.1%) of the patients. The average patient age was 18 years old (range: 12–24 years). A was the blood type that was most prevalent (40.5%). 12.6% of patients had alloantibodies found. The most frequently isolated antibodies were anti-D (33.3%), anti-K (25.9%), and anti-E (14.8%). Age, sex, the number of units transfused, the age at which the transfusion began, the history of splenectomy, and alloimmunization were not associated with one another. Conclusions. Anti-Rh and anti-K antibodies were prevalent in this patient group. Age, sex, the number of units transfused, the starting age of the transfusion, and previous splenectomy history could not predict the occurrence of alloimmunization.
