Title: An interventional pilot study in primary care to increase the demand for ferritin addresses alopecia and iron deficiency.
Abstract: Background.)e goal was to examine the demographics and laboratory testing patterns of primary care alopecia patients, with a focus on the requests for ferritin and hemoglobin measurements, as well as values indicating anemia and iron deficiency, and to assess the outcomes of an intervention involving automatic ferritin registration and measurement when not requested. Methods. In addition to an intervention to automatically register and measure ferritin when not requested by the general practitioner, retrospective and prospective observational cross-sectional studies were also carried out. Results. In the retrospective and prospective studies, there were 343 and 1032 primary care laboratory requests prompted by alopecia, respectively. Nearly all patients had their ferritin and hemoglobin tested. The intervention recorded and measured that 123 ferritin and 24 iron deficiencies were detected in patients with alopecia, all women, at a cost of 10.6€. 5% of the cohort had anemia, and 25% had iron deficiency. Conclusion. Most of the alopecia patients in primary care who requested lab work were young female patients. In order to detect iron deficiency in 27.9% of the women who received our intervention, ferritin was given when it wasn’t requested. This could have prevented the negative effects of iron deficiency on hair loss.
