Title: Safe Blood Transfusion Procedures Used by Nurses in a Major Ghanaian Referral Center
Abstract: Errors in the transfusion of blood and blood products can cause morbidity and mortality that can be avoided. As the last link in the chain to get blood to the patient, nurses play a significant role in the transfusion process. They must therefore be familiar with the most recent national and international standards for blood transfusion guidelines and the proper handling of adverse transfusion events. This study evaluates the nurses’ knowledge of and practices regarding the safety of blood transfusions at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. A structured questionnaire (Routine Blood Transfusion Knowledge Questionnaire) was used to gather information from 279 nurses from seven clinical directorates of the hospital using a descriptive cross-sectional design. Stata 14.0 was used to process the data. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the variables, and inferential statistics were used to establish relationships. More than 90% of the respondents had at least a diploma in nursing or midwifery, 63% had transfused blood at least five times, and 46% had never had any blood transfusion training. The average score in the four categories of knowledge about blood transfusions was 29, and 54% of the respondents performed below average. The knowledge test’s highest overall score was 53%. This suggests that nurses’ knowledge of safe blood transfusion procedures as outlined in Ghana’s National Blood Service’s clinical guidelines for blood transfusion was lacking. The knowledge of safe blood transfusion procedures and training/experience did not have a statistically significant relationship. To ensure patient safety during blood transfusions, regular and ongoing training updates are required, as well as auditing.
