Title: Ph.D. Theses on Literature’s Move-Step Structures in Japanese and UK Higher Education
Abstract: Analyzing the move-step patterns of Japanese and English introductory chapters of literature PhD theses and the perceptions of PhD supervisors in the higher education environments of Japan se and the United Kingdom is the goal of this research. For this inquiry, three universities in Japan and three universities in the United Kingdom each supplied 51 Japanese and 48 English introductory chapters of literature PhD theses. These chapters were written in either Japanese or English by native speakers of those languages. For the goal of conducting genre analysis on 99 introductory chapters, a revamped version of the “Create a Research Space” (CARS) paradigm was applied. In addition, interviews with seven supervisors from Japan and ten from the United Kingdom were performed using a semi-structured format. According to the data, the introductory chapters of the literature PhD theses had 13 stages that were particular to a move and 5 phases that were independent of a move. Each of these processes displayed a unique cyclical pattern, which revealed parallels and contrasts between the two language groups rooted in their own cross-cultural traditions.” Furthermore, “there was a diversity of opinion among the supervisors about the relative importance of the various phases and the sequence in which they should be accomplished in the introductory chapters. Based on the textual and interview analyses, a discipline-oriented Open-CARS model is proposed for pedagogical purposes of teaching and writing about this genre in Japanese or English in literature and related fields. This model is proposed for teaching and writing about this genre in Japanese or English in literature and related fields. This model is offered for educational reasons, namely for teaching and writing about this genre in either Japanese or English.”
