Title: Kim: An Expression of Spiritual Quest in Rudyard Kipling
Abstract: The Nobel Prize-winning novelist Rudyard Kipling holds a prominent role in contemporary English literature. Because of his extended sojourn in India, Rudyard Kipling developed a passion for Indian scenery, nature, and occultism despite his allegiance to the British Empire. Kipling, of course, had no love or admiration for Hinduism, but he was quite interested in Buddhism. Through the Lama’s role in Kim, According to Kipling, India is the home of Buddha, the master of the unsaid. He also displays India, which represents meditation, and the British, which represents activity. While the Lama represents meditation, Kim, the book’s protagonist, represents activity. Kim’s pursuit of spirituality propels her to accept Lama’s invitation to become one of his true disciples. This transition clarifies the specific elements of Indian spiritual tradition, such as love, truth, nonviolence, penance, and self-realization. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate Kipling’s participation and interest in Indian spirituality and ideas. The essay will also explore and consider the novel’s depictions of Indian customs, tradition, and behaviour.
