Title: Sula by Tony Morrison: Race, Class, and Gender
Abstract: The main female character in the book, Sula, is used by Toni Morrison to emphasize the complicated relationships between race, class, and gender in violating social expectations. This article explores such relationships. Sula is the protagonist of the novel. “Tiny slivers of independence are possible due to racial and societal differences, but true freedom is an illusion. Sula believes that to achieve true independence; she must first be able to rise beyond the many standards that society has set for her, which vary according to her racial and socioeconomic background. Morrison highlights the dangers posed by the trinity of male dominance, socioeconomic class, and white privilege in this piece of literature. This danger arises because the meaning of freedom to these women does not align with how society understands the concept. Clearly, white middle-class society, the dominant race and class, is in command of the illusions of freedom. As long as they stay within the accepted parameters of the white norm, However, to these female characters, their activities represent intentional and serious fights for autonomy and independence. Everyone around them will see the female characters’ behaviours as innocuous boundary testing and pointless play.”
