Title: Peer review as a method for enhancing genre knowledge: L2 doctoral students’ feedback in the natural sciences
Abstract: Students pursuing doctoral degrees in the natural sciences and conducting original research for the first time while simultaneously writing in a second language (L2) are required to become familiar with the conventions of the research article genre. This is because original research is a requirement for the doctoral degree (RA). However, it could be challenging to acquire this information. One form of educational activity that might assist in the mediation of genre knowledge is the practice of having students serve as reviewers for one another’s reading-aloud assignments. “The successful mediation of genre knowledge, on the other hand, is contingent on reviewers focussing on the genre features exhibited by the works produced by their peers. In this study, the online comments made by 24 L2 doctorate reviewers were analysed, together with the 73 texts created by their L2 peers. The purpose of this research was to get a deeper comprehension of the factors prioritised in the peer review process performed by L2 doctoral students. The review comments were organised into categories using a thematic coding system, and those categories were then contrasted with descriptions of text elements of RAs in the natural sciences. This was done so that it would be able to identify whether or not the feedback had any potential relevance to the scientific study article. This was done so that it would be possible to determine whether or not the feedback had any potential relevance. The findings showed that review comments focussed on correctness, organisation, cohesion, voice and posture, and research expertise. These categories represent significant aspects of scientific RAs,” and the findings suggested that review comments focus on these aspects.
Keywords: This article contains a number of some of which include L2 peer review, PhD students, genre knowledge, research papers, and natural sciences. All of these may be found here.”
