Description

Title: Epoxy Composites with Semiconducting ZnO Varistor Particles: Electrical Conductivity and Dielectric Loss Behaviors

Abstract: A great material platform for displaying the intrinsic nature of incorporated particles, in particular semiconducting types, and their interfaces with the polymer matrix is provided by polymer nanodielectrics. Higher loading percentages of oxide fillers (>40 vol%) present unique difficulties for the process in terms of porosity, homogeneous distribution, and dispersion. Using the epoxy impregnation method, this study examined the dielectric loss and electrical conduction behaviors of composites containing semiconducting ZnO varistor particles at various concentrations. In particular, under an electric bias field or at higher temperatures, the ZnO varistor particles increased the dielectric permittivity, loss, and electrical conductivity of the epoxy composites into three different regimes (0-50 vol%, 50-70 vol%, 70-100 vol%). The insulating epoxy matrix dominates the dielectric responses for lower loading fractions below 50 vol%. The dielectric and electric responses are mostly related to the semiconducting interfaces of ZnO varistor particles and ZnO-epoxy when loading fractions are between 50 and 70 vol%. The conducting ZnO core that creates the connected channels of electric conduction is primarily responsible for the apparent increase in the dielectric loss and conductivity at above 70 vol%. The ZnO varistor particle framework with foam agent assistance appears to be a more effective method of creating composites with filler loadings greater than 80% by volume. To explain the various property behaviors, a physical model utilizing an equivalent capacitor, diode, and resistor in the epoxy composites was put forth.
