Title: Evaluation of Chitosan, Chitooligosaccharides, and Their Derivatives’ Effects on Lemna Minor
Abstract: The production and use of chitosan, chitooligosaccharides, and their derivatives in numerous industries could lead to their release into the environment, potentially affecting aquatic organisms. The effects of these compounds on Lemna minor were examined using both an experimental and a computational method. Only D-glucosamine hydrochloride (EC50 = 11.55 mg/L) was deemed “slightly toxic” for aquatic environments based on the determined EC50 values against L. minor, while all other investigated compounds, having EC50 > 100 mg/L, were deemed “practically non-toxic.” The results of the experimental approach were in good agreement with the forecasts made by the computational tool admetSAR2.0, showing that the compounds under investigation were not regarded as toxic for crustaceans, fish, and Tetrahymena pyriformis aquatic microorganisms. The IGC50 for Tetrahymena pyriformis and the LC50 for fathead minnow and Daphnia magna were predicted by the ADMETLab2.0 computational tool, with the lowest values of these parameters being revealed by totally acetylated chitooligosaccharides in correlation with their lowest solubility. The effects of the chitooligosaccharides and chitosan on L. minor were influenced by acetylation patterns, increased deacetylation, and decreased molecular weight. Additionally, the effects on the aqueous environment were primarily influenced by solubility, with higher solubility being associated with lower toxicity.
