Title: Oxidized Sucrose’s Detailed Structural Characterization and Use in the Production of a Fully Carbohydrate-Based Hydrogel from Carboxymethyl Chitosan
Abstract: A bio-based cross-linking agent with excellent biological safety and zero environmental toxicity is oxidized sucrose (OS). Due to OS’s complex structural makeup and low purity, the exact structure of OS has not yet been determined. The two main OS products, each of which contained four aldehyde groups, were able to be structurally and quantitatively characterized thanks to the application of various nuclear magnetic resonance techniques in this study. Additionally, we looked into how carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), one of the most well-liked polysaccharides for use in biomedical applications, could be crosslinked using OS. Without the need for a catalyst, the primary amine groups of CMC and OS were immediately cross-linked to create hydrogels. It was discovered that during the preparation of the CMC hydrogel, the feed amount of OS could easily control the degree of cross-linking, and that the final degree of cross-linking had an impact on the hydrogel’s thermal, swelling, and rheological properties. Therefore, it is anticipated that the findings of this study will be applicable to the creation of fully carbohydrate-based hydrogels for use in pharmaceutical and medical applications.
