Title: Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis via Dendronized Gelatin
Abstract: Gelatin methacrylates (GelG1MA) or thermoresponsive dendronized gelatins (GelG1) were employed as precursors to control the effective reduction of Au(III) to produce stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) under UV irradiation. The amination of gelatin or gelatin methacrylates with dendritic oligoethylene glycols produced these dendronized gelatins (OEGs). A hydrophobic microenvironment is produced by crowded OEG dendrons along the gelatin backbones, which encourages the reduction of Au (III). While the dendritic OEGs provide shielding effects through crowding to form a hydrophobic microenvironment, which not only enhances the reduction but also stabilizes the formed AuNPs through encapsulation, the gelatin backbones function as ligands through the electron-rich groups to facilitate the reduction. We investigated the thermoresponsiveness of the dendronized biomacromolecules and the effects of dendron coverage on their kinetics of reduction. Hydrogels made of dendronized gelatin and AuNPs were created by in-situ photo-crosslinking GelG1MA. A novel platform for the environmentally friendly synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles is made possible by the modification of natural macromolecules through dendronization described in this report. This platform may constitute a new approach for creating intelligent nano-biosensors and nano-devices.
