Title: A MULTI-AGENT BLACKBOARD STRUCTURE FOR AIDING JUDICIAL DECISION MAKING
Abstract: Our research goal is to create a system that uses the multi-agent blackboard architecture to support legal decision-making. Agents serve as experts who can use a variety of knowledge sources and knowledge processing algorithms. Experts collaborate with one another by writing information about a current case on a blackboard. A set of rules can be used to represent knowledge. Bottom-up control underpins the inference process (forward chaining). Our system’s objective is to use precedents and statutory knowledge to identify justifications for claims that support various decisions in a particular case. When additional information could affect the judgment, our system also uses top-down knowledge from statutes and precedents to interactively query the user for that information. The user is given the justifications for various judgments so they can select the best one. To demonstrate the features of our system, we provide two examples based on Polish traffic law. Based on these findings, we contend that the blackboard architecture offers a useful method for simulating scenarios where a variety of potentially conflicting factors must be taken into account when making decisions.
