Title: Case Study: Investigating the Effects of Requirements Engineering on Other IT Project Areas
Abstract: One of the most crucial (yet challenging) facets of software engineering, requirements engineering (RE) is known to have a big impact on other aspects of IT projects and how they turn out in the end. Empirical studies examining this impact are challenging to carry out, primarily because of the significant amount of work required. Thus, it is challenging for both academic researchers and business professionals to conduct evidence-based analyses of how choices about RE practices affect the quality of requirements and other project areas. We suggest a light-weight strategy using commonly available tools to make such an evaluation possible without a lot of work. This is demonstrated by a pilot study that looked at data from six industrial projects from a single organization and used three metrics to show the effect of various RE techniques: requirement quality, rework effort, and testing. We also go over the elements necessary to make the suggested approach more widely adopted.
