Title: Population diversity in algorithms inspired by ant behavior
Abstract: While measuring the diversity in combinatorial domains is practically impossible, it is possible to measure it in evolutionary algorithms that operate in real-value search spaces, which are typically computationally complex. But despite the fact that an analysis of the search space is at least an NP problem where the direct results of the search are expressed and can be analyzed, we propose several applicable and doable diversity measurement techniques in this paper that are dedicated to ant colony optimization algorithms. Along with outlining the algorithms, we also apply them to a number of benchmark problems and evaluate their effectiveness.
Keywords: ant colony optimization, diversity measuring, exploitation and exploration balance, metaheuristics
