Abstract: The new SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 has been linked to a wide range of symptoms, from a minor cough to potentially fatal pneumonia. New problems are emerging and are being reported on a daily basis as we learn more about this peculiar COVID-19 epidemic. Mucormycosis, also called zygomycosis or phycomycosis, is a serious fungal infection that affects people with weakened immune systems. The rhino cerebral type is the most prevalent form of this deadly fungus infection. Doctors report several cases of a strange illness, sometimes referred to as the “black fungus,” among returning and recovered COVID-19 patients as a devastating second wave of COVID-19 sweeps across India. In order to assess the severity of prevalence, this paper analyzes the available statistical data. It also makes note of the clinical manifestations, nano-based diagnostic parameters, its relationship to other conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and GI disorders, as well as the significance of anti-fungal therapy in treating the same. Currently, the disease is treated with both surgical procedures and antifungal therapies. Both a timely and accurate diagnosis and a stop to the spread of COVID-19 are essential. According to the review, the disease can be controlled with the help of timely pharmacologic interventions and an early diagnosis made with a nano-based diagnostic kit. This paper also offers novel information on the use of point-of-care tests, nucleic acid-based testing, fungal detection biosensors, and galactomannans detection in the diagnosis of mucormycosis, reinforcing the need for more research in the area.
