Title: Blocking of the ESKAPE Pathogens’ Quorum Sensing Cascade by Phytocompounds
Abstract: The need for the development of alternative therapeutics has grown as a result of the pathogens Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter sp. (ESKAPE) becoming more resistant to various drugs. Quorum sensing (QS) is a density-dependent cell-to-cell communication mechanism in charge of regulating gene expression and pathogenicity. As a result, QS is thought to be a potential target for the creation of more modern anti-biofilm agents that don’t rely on the use of antibiotics. QS inhibitors (QSIs) are substances that have anti-QS effects and can inhibit the QS mechanism, which plays a major role in the emergence of bacterial pathogenesis. Numerous natural substances have a wide range of anti-QS effects. These organic substances have grown in significance as fresh approaches to warding off ESKAPE pathogens and blocking QS-related genes in recent years. Various pharmacognostical and pharmacological studies have been conducted thus far to identify novel drugs or to determine their distinctive structures, which may aid in the development of more potent anti-biofilm therapies. This review’s main goal is to discuss the various natural substances that have been discovered so far and the mechanisms by which they work to thwart the genes that cause QS and bacterial pathogenesis.
