Title: Attractive Transporters of Antimicrobial Essential Oils: Nanoparticles
Abstract: The most frequent cause of fatalities and chronic infections worldwide is microbial pathogens. Due to their excellent results, antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, are frequently used in the treatment of infections. However, due to their widespread use, multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites have appeared. Furthermore, the emergence of new infectious diseases, chronic infections, and the appearance of biofilms present a tougher challenge to the current treatment line because of inherent resistance to antimicrobial drugs and the host defense system. A unique, limitless, and novel source of antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic agents is provided by essential oils (EOs) and their biologically and structurally diverse constituents. However, their development as antimicrobials is constrained because of their volatile nature, chemical sensitivity, and poor solubility. In order to get around these restrictions, a great deal of research has been done on nanoparticles made of biodegradable polymeric and inorganic materials. Due to their inherent ability to overcome microbial resistance, nanoparticles are being studied as nanocarriers for antimicrobial delivery, antimicrobial coatings for food products, implantable devices, and medicinal materials in dressings and packaging materials. The synergistic antimicrobial activity, high loading capacity, increased solubility, decreased volatility, chemical stability, and enhancement of the bioavailability and shelf life of EOs and their constituents are potential advantages of essential oil-loaded nanoparticles. For a variety of uses, including food preservation, packaging, and alternative treatments for infectious diseases, this review focuses on the potentiation of the antimicrobial activity of essential oils and their constituents in nanoparticulate delivery systems.
