Description
Title: Nanomaterials for Food Packaging that Are Antimicrobial
Abstract: By offering protection and extending shelf life, food packaging is essential in providing consumers with high-quality, safe food products. Food packaging is a broad field based on food science, engineering, microbiology, and chemistry. These fields have all made significant contributions to maintaining the physicochemical characteristics of food and its raw materials, such as color, flavor, moisture content, and texture, in addition to ensuring freedom from oxidation and microbial deterioration. In addition to serving as conventional food packaging, antimicrobial food packaging systems are made to stop microbial growth on food surfaces, improving food stability and quality. In order to increase the shelf life of packaged food products, nanomaterials with special physiochemical and antibacterial properties are extensively researched for use in food packaging as preservatives and antimicrobials. Nanocomposites made of nanoparticles like silver, copper, gold, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, mesoporous silica, and graphene as well as gelatin, alginate, cellulose, chitosan-based polymeric nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, nanoliposomes, nanosponges, and nanofibers are some of the different nanomaterials used in food packaging. Systems for packaging antimicrobial nanomaterials are created to be more effective against microorganisms. Various research teams have recently looked into smart food packaging systems that can detect spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. The current review summarizes recent advancements in a variety of nanomaterials used in food packaging technology, with potential uses as antimicrobial and antioxidants equipped with technology granting intelligent functions and mechanisms in food packaging.
