Description
Title: Migration Screening for Tuberculosis: A Global Tuberculosis Network Survey
Abstract: Migration complicates efforts to control and eradicate tuberculosis (TB) globally because the disease knows no boundaries. In the majority of nations with a low incidence of TB, systematic screening of immigrants from TB high burden settings and, to a lesser extent, TB infection (TBI), is advised. The study’s objective was to assess the opinions of a wide range of international health professionals on the treatment of TB in migrant populations. A six-point Likert scale with various statements was used by respondents in an online survey that was available in English, French, Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian to indicate their level of agreement. The eight sections of the survey dealt with TB and TBI screening and treatment in migrants. Between November 2019 and April 2020, a total of 1055 respondents from 80 countries and territories took part. Pulmonologists (16.8%), other clinicians (30.4%), and nurses (11.8%) made up the three largest professional groups. Participants had mixed opinions on how to diagnose and treat TB and TBI, particularly regarding which TBI regimens to use and when patients should be hospitalized, but they generally supported established practices for infection control and TB surveillance (administrative interventions, personal protection, etc.). Public health policies and educational materials will be influenced by the findings of this first knowledge, attitude, and practice study on TB screening and treatment in migrants.
