Description

Title: Influence of allergic reactions to grains on growth and progression of allergic diseases of the olfactory system

Abstract: Growing evidence of allergic reactivity to fungi was found in several epidemiological and diagnostic studies, as determined by skin testing or IgE detection. It is still largely unknown how sensitization to fungi affects clinical significance and prevalence in atopic patients. Although it is thought that an allergic reaction to fungi is a major contributing factor in the development of respiratory symptoms, other mechanisms, such as increased exposure to fungi and their byproducts, mycotoxins, and other substances with irritant or immunosuppressive properties, may also be significant. It has been established that sensitivity to fungi is a risk factor for the onset and maintenance of asthma, the severity and frequency of potentially fatal asthma exacerbations, the rise in episodes of respiratory arrest, and admissions to intensive care units. Fungi have not been fully investigated as the main exogenous asthma trigger up until now. Some authors contend that a particular phenotype of severe asthma is associated with sensitization to fungi allergens. It is still unclear whether this association is brought on by exogenous spore toxicity or by fungi colonizing the airways. On the basis of recent literature, this review critically examines the current state of knowledge regarding the prevalence of IgE-mediated allergy to fungi as well as the contribution of sensitization to fungi to the allergic manifestations. We also make an effort to evaluate how significant these connections are for the treatment of allergic disorders of the respiratory tract in the future.
