Title: Imaging’s role in the diagnosis of a single pulmonary nodule
Abstract: A round, less than 30 mm-diameter opacity surrounded by normally aerated lung tissue is referred to as a solitary pulmonary nodule. Identifying the lesion’s characteristics after its discovery (especially if the identification was accidental) may necessitate a difficult diagnostic procedure. Nodules typically have a benign nature; however, part-solid lesions have a significantly higher risk of malignancy. The size, shape, density, existence of calcification, and rate of growth are the primary characteristics that characterize the solitary pulmonary nodule in computed tomography scans. Additional information on the metabolic activity of the lesions is provided by a PET-CT examination, and MRI is useful in determining whether nearby structures have been locally invaded. These tests aren’t frequently used because of their uncommon availability and highly specialized nature. Therefore, computed tomography continues to be the most significant and essential diagnostic tool despite the development of other imaging modalities. Age and smoking status are clinical risk factors that must be taken into consideration when determining the likelihood that a nodular lesion will become malignant. The complex assessment of a single nodular lesion necessitates the use of management routines in the diagnostic process, such as those suggested by the Fleischner Society, due to the multidisciplinary nature of the data required.
