Description
Title: When does a person become independent of Nicotyn?
Abstract: Nicotine dependence is a short-term side effect of tobacco use. It’s crucial to understand the mechanisms underlying this process as well as the onset of nicotine dependence. The current review discusses the widely accepted definition of nicotine dependence (as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems, Tenth Revision), as well as how little value it has in identifying the early signs of this process. Additionally, the review discusses the autonomy theory, studies’ findings that support it, and the neurophysiologic model of sensitization-homeostasis that describes how nicotine dependence develops. Despite the fact that the phenomenon of sensitization has not been proven in humans, the article presents findings from studies on animals that support the sensitization-homeostasis theory. It is also mentioned how helpful the Hooked on Nicotine Checklist is in identifying the first signs of nicotine dependence in adolescents.
