Description
Title: issues faced by cystic fibrosis patients as they enter adulthood
Abstract: Patients with cystic fibrosis require ongoing care throughout their lifetimes. More than half of the disease’s young victims pass away before reaching adulthood. Transitioning from pediatric to internist care and the patient’s acceptance of this necessity are crucial components of the patient’s care. It is important to properly prepare for the transition from pediatric care to internal medicine. Not only must medical records be transferred, but patients must also be carefully prepared for this change. Patients anticipate not only continuity of care but also an explanation of how to manage their disease. An essential part of these patients’ care is the establishment of a base for specialized hospital treatment for adult disease exacerbations. The issue has been resolved for the children’s group, but cystic fibrosis-affected adults are still waiting for a solution. It has been demonstrated that care provided in centers by a specialized team results in these patients living longer and with higher quality of life. The paper provides a summary of these two crucial aspects of the treatment of adult cystic fibrosis patients.
